We recently stayed at the newly renovated Rowan Cottage! Emily really knows how to create the perfect, equipped, dog friendly staycation! The cottage is a quaint stone cottage located in the historic village of Lanchester, Co Durham overlooking the Lanchester Railway Path.

Arriving at Rowan Cottage

Upon arriving at Rowan Cottage, you'll find parking space for one car on a driveway to the right of the the cottage. Parking is tight, with the driveway positioned between the cottage and a neighbouring property, depending on the size of your car. I drive a Ford Kuga and we favoured parking towards Rowan cottage and utilising access from the right side. Also due to the incline of the driveway don't make the mistake I make by driving in forwards and then opening the boot! 😂 It was like a comedy sketch! We appreciated the self-check-in process.

Inside, beautiful hampers awaited us, I say plural as the humans were welcomed with essentials goodies and a few sweet treats, while the dogs were welcomed with a hamper of their own. Rowan cottage has truly thought of everything for the furry friends: dog blankets, dog treats and poo bags.

The cottage offers everything you could wish for, including local walk guides, a games room filled with board games, (which we thoroughly enjoyed), darts, chess and three comfy bean bags!

The Space

Rowan Cottager is a charming cottage designed for comfort and relaxation. The spacious kitchen is fully equipped with essentials, fully equipped for all your needs; with a gas hob, fan oven, microwave, dishwasher, fridge freezer and integrated washer dryer, you will have everything you need to cook as little or as much as you want on your trip, along with some delightful extras, including a coffee machine (which is alway welcomed!) The Kitchen also offers a dining area, the traditional wooden table easily seats four people. Within the kitchen there is also a snug like area with a sofa, Smart TV and patio doors looking out onto the rear garden, a great spot to sit while the dogs chase each other in the secure garden and also quickly became my favorite spot. We visited in March and although the sky was blue the temperature wasn't very warm so to be able to watch the dogs outside but side in a little cosy snug was ideal!

The living room is both spacious and inviting, ideal for unwinding after a busy day, with a central feature fireplace featuring log effect fire within and above sits a large Smart TV. It has very cosy vibes and is ideal to relax in after a lovely long walk! The large window allows floods of natural light in making it the perfect room to relax and admire the views of the Lanchester Railway line. The sofa is positioned perfectly that Chester and Crumble both perched on their throws and watched every dog in lanchester having their afternoon walk before begging us to be taken for a walk!

Accommodating up to four guests and two dogs, Rowan Cottage offers two double beds to the 2nd floor. The beds are exceptionally comfortable, ensuring you wake up well-rested and ready to embrace the day. The master bedroom has another set of stairs which heading up reveals a dressing table and a games area, with bean bags to relax on and a selection of books and walking guides to browse through!

The Garden

The cottage has its own private enclosed garden, a delightful retreat that is both secure and welcoming for dogs with a sniffable grass area for them to enjoy. One of the garden’s standout features is the five seater hot tub, an ideal spot to unwind in style while the dogs enjoy their sniffs. Regardless if it’s a crisp spring morning or a starry evening, soaking in the hot tub adds a touch of luxury to your stay.

The patio area, complete with comfortable outdoor furniture, is perfect for al fresco dining or simply enjoying the peacefulness of the outdoors.

It isn't the largest garden buts it's absolutely perfect for dogs and it allows them the space for evening 💩!

Is This Suitable For Sensitive/Reactive Dogs?

While Rowan Cottage sits on a main road, I’d be a bit cautious about recommending it for reactive or nervous dogs. The garden is secure and there are no chances of seeing people or other dogs, however the gate between the garden and the driveway is gapped and people and dogs can be seen walking to and from the railway path so if that is triggering for your dogs then it might be something to consider. There absolutely isn't any livestock nearby or that can be seen from the property!
