Annie’s Farm Cottage: A Peaceful Dog-Friendly Escape in Northern Ireland

There are some stays that feel relaxing from the moment you arrive, and Annie’s Farm Cottage was definitely one of them. Tucked away in the countryside near Derry/Londonderry, this beautifully renovated cottage gave us the peaceful Northern Ireland escape we have been craving for a long time! Since moving to england over 15 years ago this is the first time going back, so it had to be special!

With plenty of space for the humans, a secure garden for the dogs and a covered hot tub for a little added luxury this was exactly what we wanted!

Surrounded by rolling fields and open countryside, it feels wonderfully secluded without leaving you miles away from everything. The cottage sleeps up to seven guests across three bedrooms, welcomes two dogs and is entirely single-storey, making it a great option for families, groups travelling together or anyone with accessible needs.

Arriving at Annie’s Farm Cottage

The cottage is set within a quiet rural farm setting, surrounded by traditional outbuildings and some truly beautiful countryside views. There is plenty of off-road parking immediately outside, so unloading the car, the dog beds, food, toys and everything else we somehow take away with us (minus the kitchen sink!) was refreshingly easy!

Although the cottage retains all the character you would expect from a countryside home, the fresh white exterior, sage-green windows and wooden entrance give it such a lovely, welcoming feel. Inside, we found a generous welcome hamper waiting for us with wine, crisps and sweet treats. Those little touches always make arriving somewhere new feel extra special, especially after a long day travelling from Cairyrain across to Belfast.

A Cosy Home Away From Home

The living and dining room quickly became the heart of our stay. It is spacious without losing that warm cottage feeling, with comfortable sofas, a dining table and a gorgeous wood burning stove set into the original stone and brick fireplace.

There is something about lighting the fire, putting your comfiest clothes on and settling down with a sleepy dog nearby that instantly makes you switch off. The cottage felt incredibly peaceful, and it was the perfect space for slower mornings, relaxed dinners and cosy evenings together.

The interior has been thoughtfully decorated throughout, combining traditional wooden furniture and exposed stone with softer, modern details. It feels homely rather than overly styled which is exactly what we personally love from a dog-friendly stay.

The separate kitchen is super well equipped with everything you could possible need for self-catering, including an oven and hob, microwave, fridge-freezer, washing machine, coffee maker and even an air fryer. Whether you plan on cooking every evening or simply preparing breakfast before heading out to explore all northern ireland has to offer, it has everything covered!

The Bedrooms and Bathrooms

Annie’s Farm Cottage sleeps up to seven guests across three bedrooms. There are two large and spacious king-size bedrooms, along with a third bedroom containing a triple bunk.

The two king-size rooms share Jack-and-Jill access to the main bathroom, while a second bathroom means there is no need for everyone to queue when getting ready in the morning.

The bedrooms felt calm, cosy and comfortable, with plenty of space to properly unpack rather than living out of a suitcase. Crumble also performed her usual bed-comfort inspection and appeared very reluctant to move afterwards which we will take as a glowing review. (disclaimer the throw is ours and the owners did ask us to put a throw on the bed, which we do normally do anywhere we go!)

The Enclosed Garden

A secure garden is always near the top of our list when choosing dog-friendly accommodation, and Annie’s Farm Cottage has a lovely private outdoor space at the rear.

There is a mixture of grass, gravel and planted areas, giving the dogs lots of interesting corners to investigate. The garden is fully enclosed, so we could relax while they enjoyed their morning sniffs without needing to be attached to a lead.

The garden is arranged across different levels with gravel steps leading towards the upper section. It looks beautiful and adds plenty of character, although it is worth bearing in mind for elderly dogs, very small dogs or guests with limited mobility.

Crumble, of course, made it her personal mission to investigate every level before posing beside the flowers as though the entire garden had been created especially for her.

The Covered Hot Tub

The standout feature for the humans has to be the private hot tub.

It sits beneath a wooden canopy at the top of the garden, meaning it can still be enjoyed when Northern Ireland’s weather is being slightly unpredictable. There is something particularly lovely about sinking into a warm hot tub after a day exploring, surrounded by countryside and with nowhere else you need to be.

The outdoor space also includes a fire pit and barbecue, making the garden just as enjoyable during the evening as it is during the day.

How Dog-Friendly Is Annie’s Farm Cottage?

Annie’s Farm Cottage welcomes up to two well-behaved dogs, and the private enclosed garden was the feature that made the biggest difference for us.

The cottage is spacious enough that dogs can settle without constantly being under your feet, while the hard flooring through the main living areas makes dealing with the occasional muddy paw much easier. We also really appreciated having direct access to the garden rather than needing to walk through shared grounds every time somebody needed to go outside.

Because the cottage is surrounded by countryside and working farm buildings, particularly sensitive or reactive dogs may occasionally notice activity within the wider setting. However, the rear garden itself feels private, and we found the overall location incredibly quiet during our stay.

As always, we would recommend checking the latest fencing details directly with the owners if your dog is an escape artist or has very specific requirements.

Exploring the Area

Annie’s Farm Cottage is approximately seven miles from Derry/Londonderry and provides a brilliant base for discovering both Northern Ireland and nearby County Donegal.

Ness Woods Country Park is especially close, around a two-minute drive or a ten-minute walk from the cottage. The country park is home to woodland trails, rivers and Northern Ireland’s highest waterfall, making it a lovely nearby option for walkies.

The cottage is also well placed for beginning the Causeway Coastal Route or crossing into Donegal to join the Wild Atlantic Way. Longer day trips could include Benone Beach, Giant’s Causeway, Ballintoy Harbour or Malin Head, depending on how much exploring you would like to fit into your stay.

Alternatively, you could just.....stay at the cottage, light the fire, let the dogs enjoy the garden and make full use of the hot tub!

Our Final Thoughts

Annie’s Farm Cottage offers everything we look for in a dog-friendly escape: a peaceful location, a secure outdoor space, comfortable interiors and thoughtful extras that make the whole experience feel easy.

It has retained the warmth and character of a traditional countryside cottage while still providing the modern comforts you want on holiday. The woodburning stove makes it perfect for cosy autumn and winter trips, while the garden and covered hot tub would be just as enjoyable during spring and summer.

Most importantly, we were able to properly relax without worrying about whether the dogs had enough space or whether the garden was secure. That peace of mind makes such a difference when travelling with them.

We would happily return for another slow countryside escape, and judging by how quickly Crumble made herself at home, we do not think she would need asking twice.
