Border View Cottage: A Cosy Dog-Friendly Escape on the Northumberland Border

Sitting just a couple of miles from the Scottish border, surrounded by the peaceful Northumberland countryside, Border View Cottage is perfectly placed for a getaway filled with coastal adventures, countryside walks and plenty of cosy evenings in front of the fire.

We recently stayed at Border View Cottage as inspectors for Paws & Stay, which meant Chester and Crumble had the very important job of putting its dog-friendly credentials to the test. Doesn't everyone love a dog-friendly cottage in Northumberland? As you can imagine, they took their responsibilities incredibly seriously… starting with a complete inspection of the garden, followed by testing the sofas and then settling down for a well-earned snooze!

Border View Cottage sleeps four humans across two bedrooms and welcomes up to two dogs. It has an enclosed garden, a wood-fired hot tub and is less than ten miles from the coast, making it a lovely base for exploring both Northumberland and the Scottish Borders.

Our First Impressions

From the moment we arrived, Border View Cottage felt warm, welcoming and somewhere we could immediately relax.

The cottage beautifully combines its traditional character with a fresh, modern interior. Original stonework and a large fireplace give the living space plenty of charm, while the soft furnishings, warm wooden details and navy sofas make it feel cosy without being overly fussy.

Naturally, Crumble had claimed her favourite spot on the sofa within minutes. Chester was slightly more interested in supervising from the kitchen and checking whether any of the welcome food might accidentally fall his way.

The lounge was one of our favourite parts of the cottage. The wood burner sits inside a gorgeous stone fireplace, creating the perfect place to warm up after a muddy countryside walk. Firewood, kindling and firelighters are provided, and there is also Wi-Fi, Netflix, speakers, books and games for those slower evenings spent at the cottage.

Dogs are welcome to join you on the sofas when using the throws provided, which Chester and Crumble were more than happy to hear!

A Proper Northumberland Welcome

Waiting for us in the kitchen was an incredible breakfast spread filled with local produce.

There were fresh eggs, bread, sausages, bacon, tomatoes, mushrooms, scones and plenty more for a proper cooked breakfast. It was such a generous and thoughtful welcome and meant we could settle in without immediately having to head back out to find a shop.

The cottage normally includes useful kitchen essentials such as tea, coffee, sugar, milk, freshly baked bread, butter, local eggs and honey from Chain Bridge Honey Farm next door. Larger breakfast hampers can also be added to your stay.

The kitchen itself is bright, modern and really well equipped. There is an oven, hob, microwave, dishwasher, fridge, freezer, coffee machine and all the essentials needed for cooking during your stay. It also has plenty of space for two dogs to position themselves directly behind you while you cook, just in case you forget they have not been fed for at least ten minutes.

There are farm dogs and occasional tractors or machinery around the wider property, which is worth bearing in mind if your dog is particularly reactive to noises or other animals. However, Chester and Crumble were perfectly settled inside the cottage and spent most of their downtime snoozing.

The Enclosed Garden and Wood-Fired Hot Tub

The garden is a real highlight.

Alongside the lawn, there is an outdoor dining area, fire pit and a wood-fired hot tub overlooking the surrounding countryside. The rural views make it feel wonderfully peaceful, especially as the light begins to fade.

A wood-fired hot tub does require a little more patience than pressing a button on an electric one, but heating it is all part of the experience. Once it is ready, there is nothing better than sitting outside beneath the Northumberland sky while the dogs relax inside after a busy day.

Guests also have access to a games room with pool and table tennis, as well as a tennis court, so there is plenty to keep everyone entertained without leaving the estate

Exploring the Local Area

Border View Cottage is a brilliant base for exploring both England and Scotland.

There is a roughly 40-minute riverside loop walk available from the cottage, following the footpath through the woodland and alongside the river. It is ideal for a quieter morning walk before heading further afield.

Spittal Beach is around a 20-minute drive away and welcomes dogs throughout the year. You can enjoy a run along the sand before continuing into Berwick-upon-Tweed for a wander and something to eat.

The Black Bull, Northumberland’s only thatched pub, is approximately ten minutes away, while Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve can be reached in around 35 minutes. Dogs should be kept on short leads around the reserve to protect the wildlife.

Being so close to the border also means you can easily spend part of your stay exploring the Scottish Borders before returning to your cosy Northumberland cottage for the evening.

Would We Recommend Border View Cottage As A Dog-Friendly Cottage In Northumberland?

Absolutely.

Border View Cottage offers the kind of stay that works equally well for adventurous dogs and those who prefer their holidays to involve a comfortable sofa and as many naps as possible.

The enclosed garden, practical boot room and thoughtful dog supplies make travelling with dogs feel easy, while the wood burner, beautiful interiors and hot tub give the humans plenty to enjoy too.

It felt welcoming rather than precious, stylish without losing its cottage charm and genuinely designed for dogs to be part of the holiday rather than simply tolerated.

Most importantly, Chester and Crumble settled in immediately. Between inspecting the garden, warming themselves beside the fire and stretching out across the sofas, it is safe to say Border View Cottage passed their Paws & Stay inspection with flying colours.
