Little Lamberton: A Dog-Friendly Shepherd’s Hut in the Scottish Borders

We stayed at Little Lamberton as inspectors for Paws & Stay. As always, all thoughts, opinions and enthusiastic tail wags are entirely our own.

There are dog-friendly stays, and then there are stays that have clearly been designed by people who genuinely understand dogs. Little Lamberton is a dog-friendly shepherd’s hut in the Scottish Borders that offers peaceful countryside surroundings, thoughtful dog-friendly touches and plenty of little luxuries for the humans too.

It may be little by name, but with a huge enclosed garden, wood-fired hot tub, pizza oven, firepit and outdoor cinema, there is certainly nothing small about the experience.

This visit was a little different for us because we were staying as inspectors for Paws & Stay. Our job was to examine everything from both a human and hound perspective, although Crumble took the role of Chief Sniffing Inspector extremely seriously and began her assessment before we had even finished carrying in the bags!

Arriving at Little Lamberton

Little Lamberton is surrounded by peaceful farmland, with the shepherd’s hut sitting within its own private outdoor space.

Guest parking is around a 30-metre walk from the hut, so it is worth packing with that in mind rather than bringing seventeen separate bags of dog essentials. Although, as anyone who travels with a slightly spoilt dog will know, packing lightly is much easier said than done!

The pathway runs alongside a sheep field but is securely fenced, and as you approach the hut, the open countryside immediately makes everything feel wonderfully quiet and secluded. There may be the occasional sound from the surrounding farmland, but that is all part of staying somewhere so beautifully rural.

Inside the Shepherd’s Hut

Inside, Little Lamberton feels calm, cosy and surprisingly spacious.

The soft blues and natural wood tones suit its coastal countryside location perfectly, while the layout makes very clever use of the available space. There is a comfortable sofa for relaxing, a wood burner for chilly evenings and a dining area with bench seating for two.

The double bed pulls down within the main living space, meaning it can be tucked away during the day to give you more room. There is also a proper indoor bathroom with a shower, so although this has all the charm of a glamping escape, you are certainly not expected to sacrifice the home comforts!

Dogs can join you on the sofa using the blankets provided, although they are not permitted on the bed. Crumble was more than happy with the sofa arrangement because it gave her the perfect position from which to supervise everything we were doing.

The kitchen includes a hob, fridge, toaster, kettle and cafetière, along with useful basics including tea, coffee, milk, butter, bread and hot chocolate supplies. There is even a hot chocolate velvetiser with marshmallows and chocolate flakes, which feels particularly lovely when you have spent the evening outside beside the fire. Guests can also choose a complimentary breakfast hamper for their first morning.

There are books and games for slower evenings, along with Wi-Fi, a television, Bluetooth radio and an indoor projector. Little Lamberton may encourage you to switch off from normal life, but it certainly gives you plenty to do when the Scottish weather decides that staying indoors is the better option.

The Outdoor Space

The outdoor area is where Little Lamberton really comes into its own.

Guests have access to a large enclosed garden of approximately half an acre, giving dogs plenty of space to sniff, play and enjoy some proper holiday zoomies. Crumble appeared to believe the entire field had been created personally for her, and I did not have the heart to tell her otherwise.

The garden boundary is made up of wooden fencing and hedges, with fencing and gates around one metre high. It worked well for Crumble, but owners of particularly determined jumpers or escape artists should always consider whether that height will be suitable for their individual dog.

For the humans, there are deck chairs beside the fire-pit, outdoor loungers and a covered seating area with relaxed beanbags. It is the sort of space where you can spend an entire afternoon doing very little while your dog happily investigates every blade of grass.

There is also a wood-fired hot tub, which is perfect for relaxing beneath the open sky. As it is wood-fired, it requires a little preparation rather than the instant press-a-button experience of an electric hot tub, but that only adds to the feeling of properly slowing down.

Then there is the Gozney pizza oven. Optional pizza-making kits can be arranged directly with the owner, turning dinner into part of the experience rather than something you need to rush through before getting back into the hot tub.

One of our favourite additions is the outdoor projector. With the covered seating area, pizza oven and firepit nearby, you can create your own cosy outdoor cinema night while your dog curls up beside you after a very busy day of sniffing.

How Dog-Friendly Is Little Lamberton?

Little Lamberton does not simply allow dogs; it properly welcomes them.

Dog bowls, blankets, towels, poo bags, treats, a dog bed and a toy box are all provided. There is also an outdoor tap with hot and cold water, which is extremely helpful after muddy countryside walks or sandy trips to the coast.

The standard booking is for one dog, with a charge of £25 per stay. More than one dog may be considered by prior arrangement with Paws & Stay, although the indoor space is compact and will not be suitable for every combination of dogs and humans.

For one dog who loves having space to run and sniff, however, it is a wonderful setup. Having such a large enclosed area directly outside the hut means there is no stressful lead wrestling every time your dog needs an early-morning toilet break.

Is Little Lamberton Suitable for Reactive Dogs?

Little Lamberton could work really well for some sensitive or reactive dogs, particularly those who benefit from having a private enclosed space rather than sharing communal grounds.

However, there are a few things worth knowing before booking.

The property is surrounded by working farmland, and livestock including sheep, horses and cows may be visible in the nearby fields. Two Labradors also live on site and have their own garden beside Little Lamberton’s garden. They will not enter the guest field, but the gardens share a boundary, so dogs may still see or hear one another.

The nearest road is approximately 60 metres away, with neighbouring properties around 40 to 70 metres from the hut. This helps the space feel private, but dogs who are very sensitive to neighbouring dogs, livestock or farm sounds may still notice some activity. As always, suitability will depend on your own dog’s individual triggers. For Crumble, having such a generous enclosed garden gave her plenty of freedom to explore without constantly encountering unfamiliar people and dogs.

Exploring the Scottish Borders and Northumberland Coast

Little Lamberton is brilliantly positioned for exploring both Scotland and Northumberland, giving you plenty of choices for dog-friendly days out.

Ayton is reachable on foot in around 40 minutes, where you can explore the village and see Ayton Castle and its grounds before stopping at the village store for refreshments.

Cheswick Sands and neighbouring Goswick Sands are approximately a 20-minute drive away. Both have no seasonal dog restrictions, and the long stretch of beach continues towards Holy Island, making it ideal for dogs who love sand, sea and a very long walk.

Paxton House is around 15 minutes away. Dogs are welcome throughout the grounds and gardens, as well as in several visitor areas including the Stables Tearoom, although they cannot enter the main house.

Bamburgh Castle and its beautiful beach are approximately 40 minutes away. Dogs are welcome on Bamburgh Beach throughout the year and can visit the castle’s outdoor grounds, Victorian Stables and takeaway area, although they cannot go inside the main castle building

Our Verdict: On the Dog-friendly shepherd’s hut in the Scottish Borders

Little Lamberton is perfect for a couple searching for a peaceful dog-friendly escape that feels rustic without losing the little luxuries.

The hut itself is warm, comfortable and beautifully designed, but it is the outdoor space that makes this stay particularly special. Having an enclosed field, wood-fired hot tub, pizza oven, firepit and outdoor cinema means you could quite happily arrive, close the gate and barely leave for the duration of your stay.

It is particularly well suited to one dog who loves having room to explore and humans who enjoy evenings beside the fire, homemade pizza and relaxing beneath the Scottish sky.

Our Chief Inspector certainly approved. In fact, judging by the amount of sniffing Crumble managed to squeeze into our visit, we suspect she may still consider Little Lamberton her own personal holiday field.

Little Lamberton sleeps two humans and welcomes one dog as standard, with additional dogs considered by prior arrangement.
