We've recently returned home from our very relaxing break at The Rookery in Roughlee.
The Rookery is a unique grass roofed barn conversion located in Roughlee set just off a rural road in east Lancashire, the barn boast's 360º panoramic views of Pendle.
We initially chose The Rookery for its numerous excellent amenities, with the primary reason being its accommodation for three dogs, including our beloved Maisy. Regrettably, we lost Maisy in April before we could take her to The Rookery, turning our stay into a peaceful retreat in her memory. It was also to celebrate Pop's Birthday which needed a location close to Blackpool as he wanted to fly a light Aircraft, which was a one off experience!
The location was just perfect for some much needed downtime!
Within the Rookery, you will find a spacious open-concept space encompassing the living, dining, and kitchen areas, complemented by a utility room and a guest toilet adjacent.
The living room is adorned with a charming wood-burning stove, Chesterfield sofas, steampunk-style lamps, an antique factory clock, and a unique wardrobe steamer trunk repurposed as a coffee table, once belonging to Colonel Jarl Warhlstrom. The artisanal kitchen boasts a Belfast sink and sleek polished concrete countertops, centered around a sizable island that doubles as a convenient breakfast bar.
Up the unique open-tread staircase is the first floor reading area. With two comfy chairs, factory inspired lighting and gentlemen’s club wallpaper, it's a great place to relax post hot tub with a book while Crumble curls up at your feet on the cool wooden floor (Chester wouldn't leave the garden!)
Adjacent to the reading area their are two comfortable king bedrooms. Both have Velux windows with stunning views over the Pendle countryside. The family bathroom is located opposite the reading area. With matt black tiles and gold geometric border. The most striking feature to the bathroom is the sewing machine pedestal with glass basin, a huge black profile shower and a cast iron roll-top bath that will easily fit two, this bathroom really has the wow factor.
The secure enclosed large garden area combined with the pagoda covered hot tub, panoramic views and the huge breakfast bar makes for the perfect dog friendly, relaxing family break! The outdoors also features a patio area with BBQ, and seating area. The panoramic views are breath taking.
Chester & Crumble really loved their time at the Rookery - it's definitely one of our top Dog Friendly Staycations. The space, the garden, the surroundings - all super dog friendly!

What's In The Area
There are so many walks to enjoy in and around The Rookery. We loved exploring the riverside paths around Roughlee. During our stay, we dedicated some days to exploring and some to just relaxing. Our first was spent in Blackpool with Pops flying a light aircraft and Blackpool airport is the perfect place to do that! Most of the other airports have restricted viewing for family & friends, while Blackpool there is a multiple viewing spots! Our spot was perfect for seeing Pops take off and land while we enjoyed a Starbucks with Chester & Crumble! We also explored Barley and Roughlee and stoped off in Skipton on the way home for a spot of lunch.
Barley
Located at the base of Pendle Hill, Barley is a quaint farming village that serves as a popular starting point for those embarking on the climb up the hill. Its origins date back to 1324 when it was originally named Barleegh. Visitors can find two pubs and a picnic area along the trails leading to Pendle Hill. One of those Pubs is The Barley Mow a Dog Friendly pub at the foot of Pendle Hill - The perfect start or ending point!
Roughlee
Roughlee is well-known for its proximity to Pendle Hill, its distinctive white railings, and its historical connection to the Pendle Witches. One of the witches, Alice Nutter, is commemorated with a statue in the village. Located in the Forest of Pendle, Roughlee is part of the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The best Dog Friendly pub in Roughlee is The Bay Horse Inn which is a community owned pub located within walking distance from The Rookery. We ventured there after a local walk to sample their Bread & Nibbles menu which was delicious.
Places to Eats
Aside the Dog Friendly pubs and restaurants around the area there are some fantastic take aways during out stay we sampled a Indian from the Taste of India and Chinese from China Garden both are located in Barrowford the closest town to The Rookery.
